Vulcan Energy (Vulcan) has announced a EUR 40 million project framework agreement with Siemens AG (Siemens) to provide engineering, automation, telecommunications, and building technology systems for Vulcan's main geothermal energy and lithium production project, known as Lionheart, located in the Upper Rhine Valley, Germany.
The Lionheart project aims to establish an integrated facility with a production target of 24,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LHM), along with 275 GWh of renewable electricity and 560 GWh of heat annually, over an expected operational lifespan of 30 years.
Recently, the company received its initial permit for the commercial production of lithium for the Lionheart project, which adds to an earlier permit for the commercial extraction of geothermal energy. Vulcan has also begun construction on the drilling site for its second geothermal well.
The Siemens agreement marks the last major supply contract for Lionheart. Siemens will serve as the Main Automation Contractor (MAC) for Vulcan's upstream Lithium Extraction Plant in Landau, which is already under construction, as well as the downstream Central Lithium Plant at Industrial Park Höchst in Frankfurt and the associated production well sites. This encompasses engineering and the delivery of the distributed control system, industrial network and cybersecurity framework, building automation, safety systems, and related design and lifecycle support.
Siemens Financial Services is also an investor in Vulcan, as part of the financing secured in December 2025.
Cris Moreno, CEO and Managing Director of Vulcan, expressed satisfaction in collaborating with Siemens, noting their extensive local presence and experience in delivering engineering, automation, telecommunications, and digital technology for similar industrial projects.
“With construction underway, we are poised to partner with our key associates to realize the Lionheart Project, which will establish Europe's first fully domestic and sustainable lithium supply chain.”
