Premier Energy is establishing one of the largest battery systems in Southeastern Europe.
Premier Energy Group has commenced the construction of a 200 MW / 400 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in eastern Romania. This facility is expected to rank among the largest standalone ones in the country and in Southeastern Europe.

Shortly after agreeing to acquire Evryo Group, which includes the power distribution operator Distribuție Energie Oltenia, Premier Energy Group provided a significant update regarding Romania. They have initiated the development of a two-hour BESS with a capacity of 200 MW, equating to 400 MWh of storage.

Romania is progressively closing the gap with Bulgaria in terms of battery storage markets in Europe. Several neighboring countries boast substantial solar power generation and significant price fluctuations in daily electricity exchanges, creating strong opportunities for arbitrage, particularly with the rising incidence of negative pricing.

The total expenses for the project are estimated at EUR 75 million. Premier Energy purchased the ready-to-build initiative in November for EUR 7 million. The location for the standalone battery energy storage system is situated near Iași, Romania’s third-largest city.

The electricity producer and distributor, as well as a natural gas distributor, is also engaged in Moldova and Hungary. It is listed on the Bucharest Stock Exchange and is reportedly indirectly controlled by Czech businessman Jiří Šmejc, according to Romanian media.

The BESS being built in eastern Romania will be among the largest in the country and Southeastern Europe, with development and construction costs estimated at EUR 75 million. The battery system is intended to enhance the stability, flexibility, and resilience of the energy system, as noted in the announcement.

Premier Energy further stated that it secured up to EUR 100 million in green financing from Československá obchodní banka (ČSOB) based in the Czech Republic. These funds will aid in the construction of the BESS and other renewable energy initiatives, including wind and solar projects. Additionally, the company reported a 97% increase in electricity production from its own assets last year.

Last month, the company signed a deal to acquire Evryo Group from funds managed by Macquarie Asset Management. This EUR 700 million transaction, pending shareholder and regulatory approval, will bring Distribuție Energie Oltenia into the Premier Energy Group.

Financial closure is expected in the latter half of 2026, according to the parties involved. Distribuție Energie Oltenia serves as the electricity distribution system operator for the southwestern Romanian region of Oltenia.
