Excluding prosumers, Romania has thirty battery energy storage systems (BESS) with a total capacity of 599 MW. The latest addition from Güriş has pushed the overall capacity beyond 1 GWh.
Romania is witnessing a significant surge in the construction of battery systems, aiming to catch up with Bulgaria's lead in the sector. As of April 1, data from electricity transmission system operator Transelectrica indicates that this technology contributes 599 MW of operational power. Notably, prosumers in Romania may have an even higher combined operational capacity.
Güriş, based in Turkey, completed a 98.6 MW battery energy storage system last month in western Romania, adding 196.4 MWh to the country's total capacity. However, Transelectrica lists these figures as 100 MW and 206.4 MWh. According to their data, total capacity has reached 1.13 GWh.
The company received a EUR 10.7 million grant from the Ministry of Energy for the project a year and a half ago. The facility is located in the village of Iaz within the Obreja commune in Caraș-Severin county. Simtel Team served as the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor for Energy Capital Group, which is owned by Mogan Bucharest, part of Güriş Group. The project's value was RON 168.9 million (EUR 33.1 million) excluding VAT.
Güriş’s BESS ranks second in the country, representing a third of the entire capacity. In December, Nova Power and Gas launched a 201.2 MW / 402.5 MWh system in Florești, Cluj county. The operating subsidiary is called Nova H.
Nova Power and Gas also manages two additional battery systems in Romania, including another under the name Nova Power 170. The three systems each have an operational power of 30 MW and a capacity of 60 MWh.
Monsson’s CEM Gălbiori 2 is the third-largest BESS, with a capacity of 54 MW and 120 MWh.
The list contains 31 systems, including AOT Energy’s Arad project, which comprises two units of 1 MW and 0.5 MWh each.
Construction is underway for more significant BESS facilities. Premier Energy Group has initiated work on a 200 MW / 400 MWh battery energy storage system in eastern Romania.
PNE Romania has recently announced that it obtained construction permits for two standalone BESS projects of 165 MW / 330 MWh and 107 MW / 214 MWh in Constanța county in Dobruja. This region is a key wind power hub, with a growing focus on photovoltaics, hybrid power plants, and battery storage.
Both systems will be connected at 110 kV within the transmission network to aid grid stability, according to the company, which is a subsidiary of PNE based in Germany.
Additionally, the company is working on three standalone storage projects across Romania at both transmission and distribution network levels, and is also advancing solar power initiatives with co-located BESS.
