Swedish renewable energy developer OX2 AB announced today that it has made the investment decision to build a 50-MW/209-MWh battery near its upcoming Fagerasen wind farm in Sweden.
The company has secured funding for this new project from DNB and UniCredit by extending their existing commitments to the wind project. A supply agreement for the battery energy storage system (BESS) has been established with China's Trina Solar, and construction is expected to commence this summer.
The BESS will be situated in the Malung-Salen municipality within the Dalarna region of central Sweden, with plans for it to commence commercial operations by the end of 2027. It will enhance the functionality of the 189-MW Fagerasen wind farm, which is anticipated to produce around 550 GWh of electricity per year using 27 Nordex turbines.
Matthias Taft, CEO of OX2, stated, “The combination of wind and energy storage enables better alignment of production with demand and ensures more efficient use of the electricity generated.”
Earlier this year, OX2 made an investment decision for the wind farm project, which is estimated to cost approximately SEK 3 billion (USD 308.8 million/EUR 271.1 million). This facility will mark the company’s first wind park ownership in Sweden.
