In the first quarter of 2026, 45.5% of the electricity produced in the EU was derived from renewable energy sources. This marks an increase from 42.7% during the same quarter in 2025.
Wind energy emerged as the leading source of renewable electricity in the EU, contributing 44.9% of the total, an uptick from 42.3% in the first quarter of 2025. Hydropower followed with 28.0%, while solar power made up 17.3%. The rest of the renewable electricity was sourced from combustible renewable fuels (9.4%) and geothermal and other energy sources (0.4%).
Denmark, Portugal, and Lithuania ranked highest among EU countries in terms of electricity generated from renewable sources. Denmark achieved 90.0%, primarily from wind, Portugal reached 82.9% mostly from hydropower, and Lithuania attained 75.7%, largely from wind.
Conversely, the lowest shares were seen in Czechia (12.7%), Malta (13.0%), and Slovakia (17.2%).
