Austrian engineering firm Andritz AG announced today the initiation of a 12.5-MW green hydrogen facility, claimed to be the largest in the country, for gas storage operator RAG Austria AG.
Situated in Gampern, Upper Austria, the plant is designed to produce approximately 17 million cubic meters, or over 1,500 tonnes, of green hydrogen each year. It will primarily utilize solar energy for water electrolysis, allowing for the storage of excess renewable energy generated during summer months for use when energy demand is high. This will enable RAG Austria to establish extensive seasonal energy storage, ensuring renewable energy is available for electricity and heating during winter months.
Andritz will serve as the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor for the project, managing the installation and commissioning of the plant along with the hydrogen purification and compression systems. The company anticipates that the facility will commence commercial operations by the end of this year.
RAG Austria is financing the project using its own funds. The company also noted that various local energy providers, including EVN AG, Energie AG, KELAG, LINZ AG, and Salzburg AG, have already reserved electrolysis capacity.
