Romania's energy production declines from January to May.
Romania's energy production decreased by 2.9% year-on-year in the first five months of 2026, reaching 6.705 million tonnes of oil equivalent (TOE), according to provisional figures released by the statistical office.

The total energy resources of Romania, including imports, amounted to 12.928 million TOE from January to May, marking a 4.5% decline compared to the previous year. Imports made up 48.1% of the total resources, or 6.223 million TOE, which is a 6.1% decrease from the year before.

The combined electricity output and imports in Romania during this period reached 29.207 TWh, an increase of 1.4% compared to the previous year. Domestic electricity generation rose by 6.2% to 22.328 TWh. Thermal power contributed 29.9% to the total output, while hydropower represented 28.6%, nuclear power 18.1%, and wind and solar contributed 13.5% and 9.9%, respectively.

Thermal power plants produced approximately 6.684 TWh of electricity during the five months ending in May, which is a 4.4% decline compared to the same period last year.

Hydropower output in the country surged by 23.2% year-on-year, reaching 6.376 TWh.

Electricity generation from Cernavoda, Romania’s only nuclear power facility, decreased by 12.3% to 4.037 TWh in the January-May timeframe.

Wind farms generated about 3.019 TWh of electricity, a 15.4% increase year-on-year, while solar plants produced 2.212 TWh, a rise of 35.9%.

Final electricity consumption saw a slight decline of 3.4% year-on-year, totaling 20.209 TWh during the review period. Meanwhile, technological consumption in power plants increased by 16.2% to 2.525 TWh.

Romania's electricity exports rose by 13.1% year-on-year to 6.474 TWh in the first five months of 2026, whereas imports dropped by 11.8% to 6.88 TWh.

The country produced 970,000 TOE of crude oil, which is a 7.5% decrease compared to last year, and 620,600 TOE of coal, down 19.3%, during the January-May period. Natural gas production fell by 0.8% year-on-year, totaling 3.126 million TOE.

In 2025, Romania's overall energy production declined by 2.3% to 16.527 million TOE. TOE refers to the estimated amount of energy produced by burning one metric tonne of crude oil.
