The Swedish government granted Norwegian energy company Statkraft permission on Thursday to construct the Hastliden wind farm, which will feature 85 turbines and is expected to produce 2 TWh annually.
Hastliden is part of the extensive Markbygden 1101 wind farm initiative in Pitea municipality, developed by Svevind. Statkraft purchased Svevind’s operations in Sweden in 2023.
The government’s announcement stated that Hastliden’s capacity could reach 600 MW, depending on grid capabilities. The project previously held a permit for shorter turbines, but the new authorization allows for heights of up to 300 meters.
Statkraft expressed satisfaction with the long-awaited approval, highlighting that Hastliden will aid in strengthening Sweden's energy supply and supporting industrial growth in the northern region.
Additionally, Statkraft signed a letter of intent with iron ore producer LKAB for electricity supply from Hastliden, which is part of LKAB’s energy transition plans.
The approval for the Hastliden onshore project coincided with the Swedish government's decision to approve permits for two new offshore wind farms while rejecting eleven others.
