Uniper and Q1 Energie AG have made an agreement for the supply of bio-LNG. This renewable fuel will be made accessible for road transport across various German states through the Q1 bio-LNG network. This collaboration marks the first business partnership between the two companies and highlights their shared objective of promoting low-emission fuel solutions for heavy transportation.
Nils Beenen, Managing Director at Uniper Energy Sales GmbH, stated, “The partnership with Q1 underscores the growing significance of bio-LNG in the heavy-duty transportation sector. Our integrated bio-LNG supply chain allows us to offer renewable gases throughout the entire value chain, from procurement and liquefaction to customer delivery.”
Sven Haberkorn, Head of Supply & Tank Farms at Q1 Energie AG, remarked, “Through our collaboration with Uniper, we are enhancing our capacity to supply certified bio-LNG and establishing another dependable partner to collectively push for lower-emission mobility.”
The sustainably produced biomethane is liquefied at the Gate terminal in Rotterdam, utilizing existing LNG infrastructure, and temporarily stored as bio-LNG. It is then transported in ISO tank containers from Rotterdam to a central storage facility in Germany, where Q1 manages its distribution to filling stations as needed. Uniper, as the owner, importer, and distributor of the bio-LNG, oversees the complete supply chain from the transportation of biomethane to its liquefaction and importation into Germany, thus qualifying for the associated GHG quotas.
The bio-LNG liquefied at the Gate terminal is derived from sustainably produced biogas, which is created in an EU member state and processed into biomethane. The process involves the removal of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide to produce a gas of comparable quality to natural gas. Subsequently, the biomethane is integrated into the natural gas grid. It is then transferred at the offtake point and liquefied using the existing LNG infrastructure. The entire supply chain adheres to internationally recognized certification systems acknowledged by the European Commission under the Renewable Energy Directive (RED).
