Norwegian utility Statkraft and DHL Group announced a ten-year power purchase agreement (PPA) on Thursday, which provides the logistics company with electricity from a new 13.2-MW onshore wind farm in northern Germany.
The agreement, which started supplying power in February, will have Statkraft delivering approximately 35 GWh of electricity each year from the Sollwitt-Pobuell wind farm in Schleswig-Holstein. This wind farm was commissioned last year and operates independently of Germany's Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) subsidy scheme, according to the companies.
The agreed volume is anticipated to fulfill around 8% of DHL's electricity needs in Germany. This supply will serve both Deutsche Post, the German entity of DHL Group, and DHL operations throughout the country, as stated in the announcement.
This agreement represents DHL's first long-term onshore wind PPA in Germany and enhances its existing offshore wind PPAs, like those for the He Dreiht and Kaskasi wind farms, as the delivery company aims to diversify its renewable energy sourcing.
"By incorporating our first onshore wind PPA, we are bolstering the resilience of our energy supply and actively promoting the development of new renewable energy capacity in Germany,” said Anna Spinelli, chief procurement officer and head of mobility at DHL Group.
