Brent crude oil dropped over $1 to below 108 a barrel on Monday and was headed for its first monthly fall since May, as tensions over Iran attenuated and a potential U.S. government shutdown eclipsed the outlook for demand. Brent declined 83 cents to $107.80 a barrel by 09:50 GMT, set for a 5.5-percent monthly drop. Meanwhile, U.S. crude was down $1.09 at $101.78 a barrel.

Last week China has announced that it will ban the construction of new coal power plants in three regions near Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong, in a move which aims to reduce the consumption of coal below 65% of total power generation by 2017, in comparison to 70% currently, and to reduce country’s air pollution.

Brent crude declined below $109 a barrel on Friday and recorded for its third straight weekly loss, as fading worries over Syria and Iran reduced risks to supply from the Middle East. Meanwhile, Brent crude for November delivery hit a session low of $108.88 a barrel, before paring losses to trade at $109.12 a barrel by 04:06 GMT, off 9 cents. Meanwhile, U.S. crude for delivery in November dipped 33 cents to $102.70 a barrel, dropping for a sixth session out of seven.
