NUS Deutschland GmbH, the Duesseldorf-based German NUS division, produced the annual ranking of world power costs for industry. Costs were based on prices on June 1 for the supply of 1,000 kilowatt with 450 hours use per annum, typical of a sizeable industrial manufacturer. The prices excluded value added tax. The percentage change was calculated on dollar basis, using local currencies in order to eliminate currency movement distortion, and then expressed in euros.

China’s largest power grid operator, State Grid Corporation, has announced that nation’s on-grid wind power capacity has increased considerably, reaching 50.26 GW, or a yearly growth of 87% over the past six years and will continue to rise to 100 GW by 2015 and 200 GW by 2020. Wind farms are the second largest contributor to renewable energy capacity after hydropower.

Brent crude increased to 114 dollars per barrel on Monday on tight supplies from the North Sea due to a UK oilfield closed for maintenance work. Brent oil for October was traded up 66 cents at 114.37 dollars per barrel at 08:50 GMT, after having dropped over 2 dollars on Friday on expectations that U.S. might release some of its reserves. Meanwhile, U.S. crude oil traded up 10 cents to 96.11 dollars.

Following the decision of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel to phase out nuclear energy and switch to cleaner energy generation, coal consumption has been steadily increasing. A 2,200 MW lignite-fired power plant, near Cologne, started its activity last week as part of the country’s energy policy.
