GT ENERGY to build the UK’s largest geothermal heating project

The developer GT Energy has unveiled its plans to build the largest geothermal heating project in UK. The project will tap into the Cheshire Basin, which holds the largest geothermal resources in UK, located beneath Manchester. The 10 MW plant using two 3,000m wells drilled in the city’s Ardwick district will provide heating needs to approximately 7 million homes. Moreover, the project will help creating new jobs in the region and sustaining the expansion of a low carbon economic zone.

DECC: UK renewable electricity production up 33% in 2011

The UK’s electricity production from renewable sources jumped by 33% in 2011, mainly due to a hike in solar photovoltaic capacity increasing by 12 times, a trebling of biomass capacity, and a 37% jump in offshore wind capacity, according to a recent report released by the Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC).
