Venezuela: Major gas agreement with Eni and Repsol

First Solar slashes its outlook for 2011

First Solar slashed its sales and earnings outlook for 2011 for the second time in two months, while its 2012 outlook is seen below Wall Street view. The new forecast does not include expected charges planned to be allotted for efficiency improving. Currently, the company expects to register net sales between 2.8 and 2.9 billion dollars in 2011, down from its October forecast of 3 to 3.3 billion dollars.

TEPCO seeks extra funds for Fukushima compensation

Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), which is the Fukushima power plant operator, asked the Japanese government for additional aid equivalent to 690 billion yen (£5.6 billion) in order to help meet its obligations to disaster victims.

Highly volatile EUA carbon trading

Benchmark EU carbon prices fell to a record low earlier this month, as prospects of a slowing economy eroded demand in a market analysts say is oversupplied. Since the start of the year carbon prices have shed half their value to below 7 euros per tonne, prompting some calls for EU officials to rescue the beleaguered market. On Dec. 20, EU lawmakers backed a proposal to let the bloc's executive Commission prop up record low carbon prices by withholding 1.4 billion permits from the third phase of its Emissions Trading Scheme, sending the prices 20 percent higher. The intraday move was more than 30%.
