Munich city utility Stadtwerke München (SWM) has laid out a plan for the heating transition in Munich, Germany that aims to establish CO2-neutral heating by 2040 at the latest, ahead of the 2045 target set by the federal government. With much of this capacity to come from geothermal, SWM is undertaking the expansion of heating networks, new geothermal projects, and additional drilling.

The European Commission has approved under EU state aid rules a French aid scheme to set up a guarantee fund for deep geothermal operations. The fund will be implemented for a period of 10 years and may provide compensation for deep geothermal projects, providing some protection against the risk linked to the high degree of uncertainty of deep geothermal resources during drilling.

The green light has been given to proceed with the first geothermal heating project in Vienna, Austria. This project will be undertaken by Vienna’s city utility, Wien Energie, and will see the construction of a geothermal heating plant on the outskirts of Seestadt Aspern.
