Germany to compensate utilities for nuclear phaseout losses

The German cabinet has agreed to grant compensation of up to EUR1 billion (USD1.17 billion) to the utilities forced to shut down their nuclear power plants by the Energiewende, or energy transition, that the government of Chancellor Angela Merkel introduced in response to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident in Japan in March 2011. At that time, Germany was obtaining around a quarter of its electricity from 17 nuclear reactors operated by EnBW, EOn, RWE and Vattenfall.

Poland: Energa wishes to stop purchasing renewable power certificates

According to Polish Energa calculations, an amount of around 110 million zlotys ($31.20 million) could be saved next year if it cancelled long-term contracts which were signed for purchasing certificates that displayed some of its power was produced from renewable sources.

Daily (25.07.2017): European carbon prices rose on Monday to €5.20 level

Oil prices rose on Monday, cancelling Friday’s losses after leading OPEC producer Saudi Arabia pledged to cut its exports. Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih declared his country would considerably limit crude oil exports in August. Brent crude increased by 1.12% to $48.60 a barrel, while WTI price climbed by 1.25% to close at $46.34 a barrel.

Panasonic and Toyota create first car with solar panel

Panasonic Corporation has started producing 180-watt solar cells that can be installed on the roof of a car. The cells have been used to mass-produce the first car with a solar panel on its roof.
