US emissions are declining

Emissions of carbon dioxide in the United States are declining; meanwhile coal and shale gas exports are increasing sharply causing a further darkening of skies over Europe and Asia. According to figures showed by EIA, US coal exports reached a record of more than 115 million tons in 2012, more than double if compared to 2009 figures, and a 17% increase over the previous year.

In 2012 CO2 levels second highest in 54 years

In 2012, concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere increased by the second highest amount since 1959, when modern monitoring began. According to Pieter Tans, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientist who leads the effort to track CO2 levels, carbon dioxide levels augmented by 2.67 parts per million in comparison to a year before, to total something like 395 parts per million.

China to introduce a carbon tax

China has announced it will establish a carbon tax by adding CO2 to the scope of existing environmental levies. According to a senior official with the Ministry of Finance, China will introduce a set of new taxation policies intended to protect the environment, including a tax on carbon dioxide emissions.

Global CO2 emissions reached a new record in 2012

Global emissions of carbon dioxide were at a record high in 2011 and are expected to take a similar jump in 2012, as this year global CO2 emissions from the burning of fossil fuels are likely to hit 2.6% rise in comparison to 2011 levels, and according to some scientists it's quite impossible now that global warming can be limited to 2 degrees, which is the international target. Current level of the gas emissions is at 58% higher than 1990 levels.
