Coal still plays an important role in UK’s electricity generation, as in the third quarter of this year, coal generated about 35 % of the UK's electricity, according to Government figures, at the same time as gas provided 28 %of electricity, and nuclear 22 %, while renewable accounted just under 12%.

UK energy regulator Ofgem announced on Monday that it has allocated about 24.2 billion pounds to the improvements of the national gas and power grids. This move will add an average of about 12 pounds to annual household energy bills for the next eight years to come.

The last turbine has been installed at the UK’s London Array offshore wind farm. After installing all 175 turbines at the 630MW project, 55 of which are supplying power to the grid, while the remaining 120 will be connected over the coming months, the wind farm is on the way to be ready in spring 2013 and will generate enough power for more than 470,000 homes.

Ed Davey, Energy Secretary, has announced that exploration works could now continue in the county, allowing Cuadrilla Resources Ltd. to resume operations in Lancashire, which was halted in 2011 when the test-drilling caused two minor earthquakes in northwest England.
