The Italian peninsula stands today for the land of solar energy, due to the rapid expansion of photovoltaics, placing Italy first in the world ranking for new solar plants installed. For 2011 a total of 3 to 5 GW installations were estimated, but the forecasts have been surpassed with the connection of about 9.3 GW of PV systems, in part as a result of the installations which were not connected at the end of 2010.

According to a study made by IMS Research, US Photovoltaic installations more than doubled in the first half of 2012, reaching 1.7 GW and is expected to reach 4.3 GW in 2012, a growth of over 120% in comparison to 2011. The country is expected to become the third largest PV market in 2012, accounting for 40% of new capacity growth.

IEA expected great growth in renewable energy markets by 2017, while the photovoltaics industry is expected to scale up the fastest and is forecasted to reach about 230 GW in 2017, compared to just 11 GW of concentrating solar power (CSP) capacity now. Solar power will contribute with about 5% to renewable energy generation in 2017.

After weeks of disputes, the Mediation Committee of the Bundestag (German parliament) and the Bundesrat (Federal Council) have finally succeed to reach an agreement on the controversial issue of solar PV feed-in tariff cuts.

Germany’s federal government and its 16 states failed to come to a compromise on the proposed cuts of solar PV subsidies during an official government arbitration session, which will continue later on June 27th, 2012.
