Europe's long-term gas contract disputes

European energy companies faced with falling profits are turning up the pressure on long-term suppliers such as Russia and Qatar to amend long-term, oil-indexed sales of gas. Recession and market liberalisation measures by the European Commission have caused oil and gas prices to diverge, costing utilities billions. Disputes, re-negotiations and arbitration have led producers to temporarily grant discounts on gas supplies. Some have lowered prices and others have linked supplies to prices at Europe's freely traded spot gas trading hubs. Some utilities also want greater flexibility by being able to reduce supplies beyond minimum contracted levels during times of low demand. Many negotiations are still under way.

BP in talks with Rosneft over a £ 17 billion deal

British oil company BP confirmed that it is in advanced talks about selling its stake in TNK-BP to Rosneft, Russia’s state-controlled oil company. The deal has yet to be approved, even if BP confirmed that it was in “advanced discussions” with Rosneft concerning the sale of its 50 % stake in TNK-BP.

Iberdrola to sell a stake in UK power grid to reduce its debt and finance further investments

Spanish power company Iberdrola, which owns the Scottish Power, is envisaging the sale of a minor stake in its UK power grid, valued at 4.5 billion pounds ($7.3 billion), as a strategy to reduce its debt and to fund the upgrade of Scottish electricity transmission grid.

UK: SSE customers to see their energy bills up 9%

SSE, UK energy utility, announced that from mid-October electricity and gas bills will increase by 9%, blaming higher energy network costs, regulation and higher commodity prices. Around half of the cost of SSE's energy bills is determined by wholesale levels.

Gazprom to bid for EDF Energy U.K. Power Plant

The Russian giant Gazprom envisages bidding for a U.K. power plant put up for sale by EDF Energy, deal which will provide the gas major with a production base in UK to complement its growing trading business.
