Poland obtained its first gas from fracking

Lane Energy Poland, an exploratory subsidiary of ConocoPhillips, is now extracting some 8,000 cubic metres of shale gas per day at a test well in the northern city of Lebork in Poland. Currently it pays some of the highest gas rates in all of Europe.

Historically, Poland has been an important producer and exporter of coal. Poland became the principal coal producer in Europe in the 1970s. Poland consumes more than 75 million tons of coal per year, which makes it the 10th largest coal consumer in the world and the 2nd largest in the EU, after Germany.

Ukraine continues to reduce gas imports from Russia

Ukraine intends to develop several gas routes from Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Romania and to increase imports from EU countries as it want to reduce imports of expensive gas from Russia. Ukraine has pointed out that a cut in Russian natural gas acquires will be deeper next year than expected, amounting to 24.5 billion cubic meters (bcm).

Poland will not apply taxes on shale gas production by 2020

After several foreign companies, as Exxon Mobil, Canada’s Talisman Energy and US oil firm Marathon, quit the Polish market in the past few months, the finance minister, Jacek Rostowski, has announced that Poland will not tax shale gas production until 2020 and will improve regulation, in a move which aims to attract energy explorers.

Poland rethinks its strategy for shale gas production

Doubts over the scale of Poland's shale gas reserves surfaced last June after ExxonMobil announced plans to cease exploration, citing disappointing test drilling results. The withdrawal of two more multinationals - Talisman Energy of Canada and U.S. oil giant Marathon - has cast significant doubts over the viability of shale gas in Poland.
