Spain’s shale gas reserves

Spain is the fifth largest energy consumer in Europe and has practically no domestic production of liquid fuels or natural gas. It has made significant progress in diversifying into renewable energy but, this only accounts for about 9% of its gross inland consumption. A quarter of consumption is fuelled by natural gas and half by petroleum, both of which Spain has to import.

SSE to build a new hydropower plant in northern Scotland

Energy giant SSE has announced that it will build a 30 million pounds hydropower plant near Ardross, in Ross-shire, Scotland. The Glasa project, which will have a total capacity of about 7.5 MW, is due to provide enough green power to supply about 10,000 households, and is expected to be completed by the end of 2015.

Scottish sales of oil and natural gas hit 9 year high

Scottish Energy Minister Fergus Edwig stated that Scottish oil and gas supply chain exports increased by 8.4 % in 2012 if compared to 2011 levels, to 12.7 billion dollars.

Poland is working on plans for its first nuclear power plant

Poland wants to reduce its dependence on highly polluting coal and expensive Russian gas imports, so it is working hard on its program for introducing nuclear power in its energy mix. At present it is highly dependent on coal, which provides around 90% of the country’s energy.
