EU curbed its carbon emissions by 1.4% in 2012: preliminary data

Europe’s carbon emissions from power plants and factories dropped by 1.4% in 2012, according to preliminary data released on Tuesday, keeping the EU on the pace to achieve its 2020 emissions reduction objective and being the second consecutive year of fall on the ETS scheme, the bloc’s main tool to fight against climate change.

UK: CO2 emissions increased in 2012

UK's emissions increased by 4.5% in 2012, if compared to 2011 levels, in major part due to an increase of almost 31% of coal consumption in power stations. Coal prices have decreased considerably as the US has exported the coal it no longer needs at home, thanks to the shale gas boom.

US emissions are declining

Emissions of carbon dioxide in the United States are declining; meanwhile coal and shale gas exports are increasing sharply causing a further darkening of skies over Europe and Asia. According to figures showed by EIA, US coal exports reached a record of more than 115 million tons in 2012, more than double if compared to 2009 figures, and a 17% increase over the previous year.
