Sweden prefers renewables to nuclear

Recently Sweden's energy minister, Anna-Karin Hatt, has announced that the government will not subsidize new nuclear power plants, favoring renewable investments. Electricity production in Sweden is dominated by nuclear power and renewables, which currently make about equal contributions to energy production- about 40%.

Coal is still the dominant fuel in Germany’s energy mix

According to a study made by German Fraunhofer Institute, electricity generated from Germany's coal-fired power plants contributed more than 50% to the nation's electricity demand as production from natural gas and wind dropped significantly. Germany's coal-fired power stations registered a 5.4% increase in production in the first three quarters of this year, rising to 189.4 terawatt hours (TWh).

Beijing to substitute four coal-burning heating plants

China has announced that it intends to replace four coal-burning heating plants in Beijing by the end of 2014, as it is trying to clean up pollution. The four plants and some 40 other similar projects would cost about 48 billion yuan and is likely to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions by 10,000 tonnes and could produce something like 7.2 GW of power fueled by natural gas.

China to ban new coal plants around Beijing

Last week China has announced that it will ban the construction of new coal power plants in three regions near Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong, in a move which aims to reduce the consumption of coal below 65% of total power generation by 2017, in comparison to 70% currently, and to reduce country’s air pollution.

U.S on the right way to meet its 2020 carbon emissions target

The U.S. State Department has announced recently that the U.S. is on the right way to reduce its emissions of greenhouse gases by 17% by 2020 if it endorses the proposed rules to cut pollution from power plants and curbs methane leaks.
