Germany-based utility company E.ON and Norwegian oil and gas firm Statoil have started on Thursday the construction of the 385 MW Arkona offshore wind project, a new wind farm situated 35 kilometers northeast of the island of Rugen in the German Baltic Sea.

E.ON and Statoil are scheduling a 60 turbine offshore wind farm for the German Baltic Sea. The $1.3 billion (€1.2 billion) wind farm, named Arkona, will be located close to the German island of Rügen.

Nine of the largest offshore wind developers in Europe: DONG Energy, EnBW, E.ON, Iberdrola, RWE, SSE, Statkraft, Statoil and Vattenfall have joined forces with independent company Carbon Trust to work on collaborative research, development and demonstration (RD&D) programme - the Offshore Wind Accelerator (OWA) in order to slash the levelised cost of energy from offshore wind, improve efficiency and availability of existing and future offshore wind farms.
