Europe: Offshore wind sector doubles in 2013, but faces challenges

Over the past six months, a total of 277 offshore wind turbines have been connected in Europe, adding more than twice the capacity installed during the same period in 2012, according to the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA).

Italian wind energy sector

In Italy the wind capacity installed has registered a great success due to government incentives offered to the sector, achieving the record value of 8,144 MW in 2012, and positioning itself 6th below countries as China, US, Germany, Spain and India. According to the TSO, total wind capacity could reach 9,600 MW by the end of this year.

Druim Ba wind farm rejected by Scottish Government

Scottish Energy Minister Fergus Ewing, has refused plans to Sustainable Energy Limited to build a 69MW wind farm, for a total of 23 turbines in the Highlands. Highland Council had rejected the plans, arguing the development of the project would have a major impact on communities in the area. The energy minister was also concerned about the impact the noise from the turbines would have on nearby properties.

London Array officially opened and running

The world's largest offshore wind farm was officially opened by Prime Minister David Cameron on Thursday. The London Array has a total of 175 turbines with a combined capacity of 630 MW and it is capable of powering 500,000 homes per year.
