DECC: UK carbon emissions rose 3.1 % in 2010

According to the latest statistics released by the Department for Energy and Climate Change, UK greenhouse gas emissions rose by 3.1% in 2010, the rise being attributed to increased home heating during a cold winter, meaning a greater use of fossil fuels and shutdowns at nuclear power plants after technical problems.

Spain aging nuclear plant may stay open

According to a newspaper report released on Monday, Spain’s incoming centre-right government may allow Garona, an aging nuclear power plant, to remain operational beyond the 2013 deadline set by its predecessors, the Socialist Party. It means Spain will be out of step with countries like Germany, which already closed several nuclear plants following Fukushima’s nuclear disaster.
