Energy consultancy Cornwall Insight has unveiled its final forecast for the January to March 2024 Default Tariff Cap, projecting a 5% rise to £1,931 for a typical dual fuel household.

Crude oil prices fell sharply on Thursday, dampened by statements from Russia's Deputy Prime Minister for Energy, who rejected a further production cut at the end of the next OPEC+ meeting. Remaining fears over the possibility of a US debt ceiling default have put further pressure on prices. Hence, Brent crude posted a 2.7% decline at $76.26 a barrel. Meanwhile, WTI crude plunged by more than 3% to close at $71.83 a barrel.

The UK's national energy regulator, Ofgem, has said its proposal to adjust the Default Tariff Cap for household gas and electricity supplies on variable rates to a quarterly regime will leave consumers "better off".

Oil prices settled modestly higher on Tuesday, supported by a lower U.S. Dollar Index and expectations for a weekly drop in U.S. crude inventories, a day after a broad selloff attributed to jitters about the impact of a default by Chinese property giant Evergrande. However, the pessimistic growth forecasts from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) limited the gains. Hence, Brent crude rose by 0.6% to $74.36 a barrel. U.S. WTI crude added 0.3% to end at $70.49 a barrel.
