UK was 6 six hours distance from finishing its gas supplies in March

At the end of March this year the reserves of natural gas detained in storage were at one of their lowest level, due to an unusually cold winter and intensified problems at a processing plant in Norway with flows of gas supplies to Britain via the Langeled pipeline which fell significantly, along with other supplies from Belgium, being just six hours away from finishing its gas supplies.

Daily: UK spot gas settles up on less supply from Norway, Belgium

Brent and U.S. crude oil futures dropped on Friday, marking the lowest levels in six weeks and since early December respectively. Brent crude slipped by 98 cents to settle at $110.41 a barrel on Friday, after having fluctuated between $111.36 and $109.82 during the session, while U.S. crude oil futures for April delivery shed $1.37 on Friday to settle at $90.68 a barrel.

UK exports gas cheaper than it pays for imports

According to the Guardian newspaper, the UK is exporting gas at a lower price than it is importing the fuel. In the period between December 2011 and October 2012, gas was being exported to continental Europe when it would have carried a higher price in the UK, at the same time as the UK exported 15 times more gas through the gas interconnector running between the UK and Belgium than it imported.

Belgium to build an artificial island to store wind power

Belgium plans to build an artificial island in the North Sea aimed to store wind energy, trying thus to lessen its reliance on nuclear power, as it intends to completely exit from nuclear power in the next future. The construction of the island in the North Sea will have a donut form and will be made out of sand, in a move that will be able to store some of the excess power generated by extensive offshore wind farms in the area.
