New oil and gas discovery for Eni in the Norwegian Barents Sea
The Italian company has announced in a press release that it has made a new oil and gas discovery in the Norwegian Barents Sea. The discovery is about 240 km from Hammerfest, and the company said that the well has confirmed good quality oil and gas, with volumes of recoverable oil estimated at between 20 and 50 million barrels. The discovery is part of Eni’s joint venture exploration activity to develop the Johan Castberg field.

UK’s biggest biomass plant has opened
Britain’s largest coal-fired power station has begun its conversion to become Britain’s largest renewable electricity producer as well as one of Europe’s largest renewable electricity generators. The project will see the coal station turn to wood pellets for fuel rather than coal, a move which aims to slash carbon emissions by more than 80%. One of the generating units has been converted to biomass while the other two will be using biomass by 2016.

Romania: Chevron forced to suspend shale gas explorations
US oil major Chevron halted exploration works for shale gas in eastern Romania for the second time in two months, as a lot of people gathered to protest against government support for shale gas exploration and separate plans to set up Europe’s largest open-cast gold mine in a small Carpathian town.

Russia and EU ready to discuss on ending antitrust probe
Last year, the European Commission formally opened an antitrust probe on concerns that Gazprom might be obstructing competition in Central and Eastern European gas markets and might have manipulated gas flows to its advantage, prevented diversification of supply, and by linking gas prices to oil prices.

EIB to finance Enel Green Power projects in Romania
The European Investment Bank (EIB) would lend to Enel Green Power 200 million euros to cover in some measure investments for some wind farms in the Banat and Dobrogea regions of Romania. The 15-year loan will partially cover investments in EGP’s wind power projects, and has a pre-repayment grace period of up to two and a half years.
