Beijing to substitute four coal-burning heating plants
China has announced that it intends to replace four coal-burning heating plants in Beijing by the end of 2014, as it is trying to clean up pollution. The four plants and some 40 other similar projects would cost about 48 billion yuan and is likely to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions by 10,000 tonnes and could produce something like 7.2 GW of power fueled by natural gas.

Coal to become the main fuel in Southeast Asia by 2035
According to the International Energy Agency, in the Southeast Asia region coal will overtake natural gas as the main power generating fuel by 2035, with its share growing to 49% from current 31% while the share of gas will fall to 28% from 44%. It is expected that the region will depend even more on oil imports in the next 20 years due to a rapidly rising energy demand.

The world will continue to depend on coal
According to a report released by the International Energy Agency, coal will be the most used fuel worldwide by 2030 as developing countries are powering the rapidly increasing cities and rural areas where billions of people have had no power.

Daily: Coal futures plunge at the weakest level in four weeks
Brent crude oil dropped over $1 to below 108 a barrel on Monday and was headed for its first monthly fall since May, as tensions over Iran attenuated and a potential U.S. government shutdown eclipsed the outlook for demand. Brent declined 83 cents to $107.80 a barrel by 09:50 GMT, set for a 5.5-percent monthly drop. Meanwhile, U.S. crude was down $1.09 at $101.78 a barrel.

China to ban new coal plants around Beijing
Last week China has announced that it will ban the construction of new coal power plants in three regions near Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong, in a move which aims to reduce the consumption of coal below 65% of total power generation by 2017, in comparison to 70% currently, and to reduce country’s air pollution.
