Fortum, Tractebel to assist in Estonian SMR deployment

Estonia's Fermi Energia has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Finnish power company Fortum and Belgian engineering firm Tractebel to cooperate on studying the deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs) in the Baltic country.

Smolensk unit 3 gets licence extension

Russian regulator Rostechnadzor has issued a 15-year operating licence extension for unit 3 of the Smolensk nuclear power plant, the last of three RBMK-1000 reactors at the site in western Russia. The move means the whole plant has permission to operate for a total of 45 years.

Czech Republic needs more nuclear units, report shows

The Czech Republic will need to build not only one new unit at its Dukovany nuclear power plant, but also more reactors at Temelín if it is to avoid becoming dependent on electricity imports from 2030, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry and Trade Karel Havlíček said yesterday. Havlíček cited the latest Mid-term Adequacy Forecast (MAF CZ 2019) published on 18 October by high-voltage grid operator operator ČEPS.
