Stephen Wilson, the Rio Tinto Energy general manager of markets and industry analysis, said that currently China is the ninth largest nuclear energy producer and that by 2020 it is likely to become the world’s largest generator of nuclear power.

Areva to build a new wind turbine factory in Scotland

French nuclear and renewables group Areva has signed a contract with the investment agency Scottish Enterprise to site one of the three new factories it is opening in Europe, in Scotland, the plant would manufacture turbines for use off the coast of the UK, each generating 5 megawatts of electricity, which could supply 6,000 homes per year and could create up to 750 jobs.

Centrica to abandon UK nuclear by focusing its expansion in the US

Centrica intends to concentrate investments in the U.S., if it decides to withdraw from new nuclear power stations in the UK. It considers the prospect of higher profit margins and huge opportunities in the shale gas boom. According to senior company sources, only a remarkable change in Government policy on subsidising nuclear power would create a business case for investment.

The Czech Republic to considerably increase the share of nuclear power production

The Czech government is planning to considerably increase the country’s nuclear power production to at least 50 percent of its electrical energy mix by around 2040 from the current 30 percent and to slash coal use to meet greenhouse gas emission targets.
