USA: World’s largest solar plant is now fully operational
The Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System, the world's largest concentrated solar power plant has become fully operational last week. Ivanpah employs concentrated solar power (CSP), which uses hundreds of thousands of mirrors to reflect the sun toward a tower. This heats a boiler in the tower, which creates steam to drive turbines and make electricity.

Spain sets out new electricity bill structure to protect consumers
Spain’s Industry Ministry will use a new method to determine consumer power bills, giving up the old auction system, which last year, had a major impact on household electricity bills while a spike in the scheme led to huge cost increases.

Scottish Power to expand the Cruachan hydro power station
Scottish Power, a global energy company and world leader in wind energy, has today revealed plans to more than double the amount of electricity that could be produced at its Ben Cruachan hydro power station, in a move which aims to balance supply from more intermittent renewable energy sources such as wind farms. Currently the station can produce up to 440 megawatts (MW) of electricity, but once expanded it could generate about 1040 MW, enough to power almost one million homes.

India to build the world’s most powerful solar plant
India intends to build the world’s biggest solar power plant which is expected to be able to generate something like 6.4 billion kilowatt-hours per year. Once the project will obtain the go ahead, the solar array would cover an area larger than Manhattan and could be capable of producing 4,000 megawatts of electricity, which corresponds to that of four full-size nuclear reactors.

Northern Ireland's first large-scale solar farm has obtained the go ahead
The largest solar farm in Northern Ireland has been given the go-ahead by the Government. The 27-acre solar farm located in Tullynaskeagh Road, Downpatrick will be connected to the nearby NIE sub-station and national grid, representing the first approval for such a large-scale solar farm in Northern Ireland. The solar project will have a total capacity of 5.1MW, capable of generating electricity to power more than 1,500 homes.
