Masdar launches new 100 MW solar power plant

The largest concentrated solar power plant (CSP) in operation in the world was inaugurated last week at Abu Dhabi, by the UAE president, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahyan. Abu Dhabi, which is one of the world's largest power consumers per capita, hopes that renewable energy will eventually help it meet 7% of its consumption by 2020 even as its economy develops.

EU to get its first oil and gas law

The EU proposed on Thursday its first law to regulate safety in offshore oil and gas drilling which aims to ensure that world's highest safety, health and environmental standards are implemented across the EU, in order to prevent any repeat of BP's catastrophic Gulf of Mexico spill.

EU: The 20% target of reducing emissions would be insufficient to prevent global warming

The EU is presently committed to reduce emissions 20% by 2020, but the European Commission President Jose Manual Barroso, declared this would be not enough to prevent dangerous levels of global warming. Barroso added that green growth is a path out of the five-year-old Eurozone crisis, saying that 4.8 million new jobs could be created if the EU meets its 2020 energy efficiency targets. Meanwhile, the EU has started talking about setting climate and energy targets for 2030.
