Highly volatile EUA carbon trading

Benchmark EU carbon prices fell to a record low earlier this month, as prospects of a slowing economy eroded demand in a market analysts say is oversupplied. Since the start of the year carbon prices have shed half their value to below 7 euros per tonne, prompting some calls for EU officials to rescue the beleaguered market. On Dec. 20, EU lawmakers backed a proposal to let the bloc's executive Commission prop up record low carbon prices by withholding 1.4 billion permits from the third phase of its Emissions Trading Scheme, sending the prices 20 percent higher. The intraday move was more than 30%.

Weekly Energy Trends - EUAs Fell Below 12 EUR/tonne

Oil Worldwide - Brent crude oil futures fell strongly in volatile trading as fresh concerns about the euro zone added to the economic obscurity pushed prices down 6.9% last week. Fresh strikes emerged in Greece in protest against new budget austerity steps. U.S. stocks had a bleeding week, the Dow Jones falling 6.4%.

Daily – Societe Generale lowered carbon price forecasts on over-supply in the market

Societe Generale announced on Tuesday to have reduced its price forecasts for European Union and U.N. carbon emissions permits from 2011 to 2015, due to over-supply in the market and less hedging by utilities, following other carbon analysts who have lowered their price forecasts earlier this month on the back of a slowing EU economy undermining demand for EU Allowances (EUAs) permits. Benchmark 2011 EUAs traded at around 11.90 euros a tonne on Tuesday.

European carbon emissions have increased a little

The price for European carbon emissions for December delivery increased by 0.4% to arrive at 15.31 euros a tonne on Wednesday, while the price for certified emissions reductions for December delivery raised 0.6%, attaining 13.47 euros a tonne, establishing a spread of 1.84 euros between EUA and CER.
