Russia retires Leningrad unit 1

Unit 1 of the Leningrad nuclear power plant has been withdrawn from service after 45 years of safe operation, Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom has announced. It said the lead unit in the RBMK-1000 series was shut down at 11:30pm on 21 December.

Novovoronezh unit 4 completes upgrade

Loading of nuclear fuel into unit 4 of the Novovoronezh nuclear power plant in Russia has been completed. The procedure is part of large-scale modernisation work on the VVER-440 reactor and the 43rd time it has been carried out there since it started operations in 1973.

Russia and Rwanda to cooperate in nuclear power

Russia and Rwanda have signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. It was signed today in Moscow by Alexey Likhachov, director general of Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom, and Claver Gatete, Rwandan minister of infrastructure.
