Chinese developers installed a record 12 GW of solar panels throughout the country in 2013, almost matching the total amount of solar power in operation in the United States, and it is likely that in 2014 it will exceed that record reaching 14GW of additional PV capacity. Until now, no one has ever added more than 8GW of solar power in a single year previous to 2013, and China’s record exceeded even the most optimistic estimates of a year ago.

Spain is one of Europe’s most energy-poor nations, importing about 99 percent of its oil and gas requirements. In its most recent Oil Market Report, the IEA has reduced its 2014 growth estimates for oil demand by 100,000 barrels per day, down to 1.1 million barrels per day, due to weaker than expected economic growth.

Global production of crude oil increased in 2012 as reserves estimates increased also. Last year, global production of oil amounted to almost 76 million barrels per day, an increase of about 3% in comparison to 2011 levels.
