U.K. Poised to Become Net Energy Exporter to Europe in Near Future
Although the UK currently imports around 7% of its electricity from Europe, the tables are going to be turned soon, partly due to the on-going establishment of new links to the continent. Aiming to quadruple offshore wind capacity this decade, the UK could have excess power to send through those transmission lines. Consequently, the UK could become a net energy exporter to Europe in five years.

Ukraine tests Zaporozhe for ENTSO-E synchronisation
Ukrainian nuclear power plant operator Energoatom and the country's transmission system operator Ukrenergo completed tests last week at unit 1 of the Zaporozhe nuclear power plant for the provision of ancillary frequency maintenance reserve services at +/-20 MW. The tests should confirm the compliance of the unit with the requirements of the Transmission System Code in order to obtain a certificate entitling Energoatom to introduce the power unit to the ancillary services market.

Submarine cable to connect 10.5 GW wind-solar complex in Morocco to the UK grid
UK-based Xlinks is planning to build 10.5 GW of wind and solar in Morocco and sell the power generated by the huge plant in the UK. This should be made possible by a 3,800 km high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line that would be connected to locations in Wales and Devon. The company’s CEO, Simon Morrish, spoke with pv magazine about the ambitious project, and on how it should become feasible.

Lithuania, Poland cross-border section of new gas link laid
The gas grids of Lithuania and Poland have now been directly linked after the cross-border section of the under-construction interconnector between the two countries was laid, Lithuanian transmission system operator Amber Grid said Feb. 2.
