The Japanese government has unveiled its support for the development of coal-fired power worldwide, by providing an annual investment of $4 billion. The move is neglecting calls from the Obama administration and global environmental groups to reduce public funding for carbon-intensive coal.

DECC: Investment in UK green energy sector reached almost £8bn in 2013

Ofgem gives the go- ahead to a £1.2bn subsea electricity link in Scotland
Scottish Hydro Electricity Transmission (SHE Transmission), the electricity transmission subsidiary of SSE, has got the green light from the UK Office of the Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem ) for a £1.2bn subsea link and transmission charging upgrade. It represents the greatest investment in the region’s electricity network since the 1950s.

Alstom to build a €450 million concentrating solar plant in Israel
French engineering group Alstom alongside BrightSource and NOY Infrastructure & Energy Investment Fund secured loans from the European Investment Bank and the Bank Hapoalim for the construction and operation of the Ashalim Thermal Solar Power Station in Israel.

Germany: 50Hertz alone will invest 400-500 million euros in power grid in 2014
German power grid operator 50Hertz intends to make an investment of 400-500 million euros this year to build transmission connections that will convey wind power from Germany's inaccessible regions to its industrial centers to sustain its move from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
