Smart grids could reduce emissions by 2.2 gigatonnes by 2050

According to Connie Hedegaard, the EU Commissioner for Climate Action, spending in clean technologies like smart grids is the key to save billions of euros by lowering energy bills and cutting in half imports of oil and gas, as well as reducing CO2 emissions by almost 2.2 gigatonnes by 2050.

Russia to set itself a 2020 carbon emissions target

Russia intends to set itself a 2020 carbon emissions target. According to Alexander Bedritsky, Russia's special representative for climate change, Moscow has begun work on establishing a legally required target. The target would be in the range of 15-25 percent below 1990 levels by 2020, this will mean a rise from actual levels.

China fixed new gas output target by 2015

According to a recent development plan released on Monday by the National Development and reform Commission and approved by the State Council, China intends to add 3.5 trillion cubic meters of conventional natural gas reserves by 2015.

Global CO2 emissions reached a new record in 2012

Global emissions of carbon dioxide were at a record high in 2011 and are expected to take a similar jump in 2012, as this year global CO2 emissions from the burning of fossil fuels are likely to hit 2.6% rise in comparison to 2011 levels, and according to some scientists it's quite impossible now that global warming can be limited to 2 degrees, which is the international target. Current level of the gas emissions is at 58% higher than 1990 levels.

IEA: U.S. could be self-sufficient in gas by 2035

U.S. natural gas production is likely to increase by about 29% from 21.6 trillion cubic feet in 2010 to 27.9 trillion cubic feet in 2035, with shale gas accounting some 49% to about 5 trillion cubic meters of the US total natural gas production in 2035, according to the World Energy Outlook launched by the International Energy Agency. The study sustains that the U.S. holds about 1,744 trillion cubic feet of technically recoverable natural gas which is sufficient to supply the country for 90 years at current rates of production.
