Switzerland to vote on nuclear phase-out

Currently Switzerland has 5 nuclear reactors which generates 40% of its electricity, but an initiative submitted by the Green Party to phase-out nuclear energy by 2029 has secured enough support for a national referendum, as the Swiss Federal Chancellery has announced that 107,533 of the 108,227 signatures presented in a petition in November are valid.

Daily: EU carbon declines on the German sale permits auction cancellation

Brent and U.S. crude oil futures edged up on Friday during a choppy trading, supported by geopolitical threats brought to supply, Chinese economic data and the possibility to reach a deal which would temporarily increase the U.S. debt ceiling. Brent crude increased 79 cents, or 0.71 percent, to settle at $111.89 a barrel, having traded from $110.47 to $110.96. Meanwhile, U.S. crude climbed 7 cents, or 0.07 percent, to settle at $95.56 a barrel, having traded from $94.91 to $95.67.

Companies call for carbon emission targets

About 50 companies- investors, trade unions, environmental groups and industry bodies - have written an open letter to Chancellor George Osborne asking a target for how emissions should be slashed by 2030, arguing that a failure to show dedication to reducing carbon emissions may damage the economy and their commercial prospects.
