Spain halts the award of new feed-in tariff contracts

The new center-right Spanish government decided to halt temporarily the award of new feed-in tariff contracts starting January 2013 amid rising fiscal challenges. This could affect negatively about 4,500 MW and 550 MW of wind and solar PV power projects respectively, as well as other energy classes’ projects.

EU ban on Iranian oil

EU foreign ministers decided on 23 January 2012 to ban new contracts to import petroleum and petroleum products from Iran and to end existing contracts by 1 July 2012. On 17 March 2012, the SWIFT electronic banking network, the world hub of electronic financial transactions, ordered to disconnect all Iranian banks from its international network that had been identified as institutions in breach of current EU sanctions.

Iran and China to keep oil prices high

Crude oil market went across difficult times when markets clashed with several supply issues in Iran and increasing demand coming from Asia and China. These movements could help increase oil prices along with a weaker U.S. dollar that could add a final drop to push U.S. prices to 118 dollars a barrel by the fourth quarter of 2012. West Texas Intermediate contracts for March delivery, currently trading at 103.52 dollars a barrel, have gained on eight of the last ten trading days while Brent, the international benchmark, recorded six positive sessions over the same time frame and was at 119.62 dollars as of 4:20PM in New York on Friday.
