Natural gas is believed to be one of the most important energy sources for the future. The great quantity of natural gas together with its environmental reliability and numerous appliances across all sectors signifies that natural gas will keep playing an ever more important role in meeting demand in energy. The RES has received the permission from the Government to build a 100 MW biomass power plant in Northumberland. It is RES's first biomass plant, with the company having developed a number of onshore and offshore wind projects and solar energy schemes.

In Italy the wind capacity installed has registered a great success due to government incentives offered to the sector, achieving the record value of 8,144 MW in 2012, and positioning itself 6th below countries as China, US, Germany, Spain and India. According to the TSO, total wind capacity could reach 9,600 MW by the end of this year.

It seems that Germany’s energy portfolio is not as green as thought. The share of coal in Germany’s electricity mix has soared to 52% in the first-half of 2013, suppressing the output from natural gas and wind turbines, according to data released by research organization Fraunhofer Institute (ISE).
