Investment in new nuclear declines to five-year low

Global energy investment fell for the third consecutive year in 2017, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). Investment in nuclear power declined by nearly 45% last year to USD17 billion. Although spending on new reactors reached the lowest level in five years, investment on upgrades of existing units increased.

Tepco likely to decommission Fukushima Daini units

The four reactors at the Fukushima Daini nuclear power plant in Japan are likely to be decommissioned, the president of Tokyo Electric Power Company Holding Inc (Tepco) today told the governor of Fukushima Prefecture. However, the company has yet to announce an official decision on the fate of the plant, close to the damaged Fukushima Daiichi plant.

China to begin the construction of up to eight reactors in 2018

According to a plan released by the country’s National Energy Administration (NEA), China will encourage the development of nuclear power this year. Five new nuclear power reactors are planned to become operational in 2018 and construction works will commence with further six to eight units.

Notice signed to continue contracts to build four VVER-1200 units at the El Dabaa nuclear plant

Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachov and Egypt's Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker agreed to proceed with contracts for the construction of four VVER-1200 units at the El Dabaa nuclear power site.
