EDF: French annual nuclear power production down 3.8% in 2012

French annual nuclear power production from 58 reactors owned by EDF totaled 404.9 TWh last year, a decrease of 3.8% compared to 421.1 TWh in 2011, this being the first decline since the crisis in 2009 (- 6.6%).

Daily: European power spot prices increase on colder weather and low supply

Brent crude oil futures for March delivery settled down 18 cents at $111.71 per barrel on Monday, ending a three-day rally , dragged down by pessimism over global economic growth which restored traders ‘focus to healthy supply levels, slashing fears of unrest in North Africa. Meanwhile, U.S. WTI crude futures were off 9 cents in overnight electronic trading at $95.47 a barrel at 1649 GMT, after hitting a four-month high last week. U.S. markets were closed on Monday for a public holiday.

Belgium to build an artificial island to store wind power

Belgium plans to build an artificial island in the North Sea aimed to store wind energy, trying thus to lessen its reliance on nuclear power, as it intends to completely exit from nuclear power in the next future. The construction of the island in the North Sea will have a donut form and will be made out of sand, in a move that will be able to store some of the excess power generated by extensive offshore wind farms in the area.
