Daily: European coal prices soar on nuclear and gas production outage

Brent crude slipped on Monday despite many geopolitical risks including U.S. air strike in Iraq, while U.S. crude increased on expectations of a draw in U.S. inventories. Brent crude dropped 34 cents to settle at $104.68 a barrel, while WTI crude rose 43 cents to close at $98.08 a barrel.

Daily: European coal prices remain unchanged on weak demand forecasts

Crude oil prices on both sides of the Atlantic increased on Monday, as investors turned their attention to concerns about continuing violence in Libya and other global hotspots, leaving behind worries about supplies glut. Brent crude rose 57 cents to close at $105.41 a barrel, rebounding from a session low of $104.52. U.S. crude boosted 41 cents to settle at $98.29 a barrel, after hitting a session low of $97.43.

UK to amend subsidies for dirty coal-fired power plants

The British government said on Monday it plans to amend the latest draft of its proposed energy capacity market to exclude long-term subsidies for ageing coal plants, succumbing to the pressure from environmental campaign groups.

British government gives the go-ahead to a new round of shale gas exploration

The British government unveiled it was opening up the bidding process for shale gas exploration in the country under the so-called "14th onshore licensing round". Alongside shale gas exploration, the bidding process will cover exploration and development of tight gas, coalbed methane and mine vent gas.
