German research criticize increasing CO2 emissions from coal plants
In 2013, the 30 largest power stations in Germany increased their emissions of carbon dioxide by 4.6% attaining 239 million tonnes, as stated on Wednesday in an analysis made by the Oeko-Institut research institute, criticizing low European carbon prices.

China: Coal consumption continues to grow
China is dealing with a big air quality problem, so recently the Government has announced that they will reduce their coal consumption share from its current 67 percent to 65 percent by 2017. The country intends to convert coal in syntethic gas, but this will result in more carbon dioxide emissions released because converting coal to make synthetic gas and then combusting the gas to make electricity will double the amount of carbon dioxide emissions released in the atmosphere.

Finland’s Kesko abandons Fennovoima nuclear consortium
Finnish retailer Kesko declared on Thursday it would give up the Fennovoima nuclear conglomerate, increasing worries over a project that is likely to engender confrontations in parliament between members of the ruling coalition, because of the ambiguity in the financial, contractual and timetable requirements.

Poland: a coal-fired unit of about $1 billion to be built by Hitachi-led consortium
Hitachi-led consortium won a contract of about 3.25 billion zlotys ($1 billion dollars) from Poland’s main utility group PGE to build a coal-fired unit of a capacity of 430-450 MW, according to a member of the conglomerate. The unit is likely to be constructed at PGE’s Turow plant in south-eastern Poland.
