Stating to the Director General of Akkuyu NGS A.S. Alexander Superfin, the construction of the first nuclear power plant Akkuyu in Turkey will start in early 2014. The preparation of an ecological report on the project’s impact on the environment will be completed in May 2013.

According to preliminary data collected by the European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA), global installed PV capacity reached 100GW in 2012 for the first time, up from 71GW in 2011 and 40GW in 2010. The world’s solar capacity can now produce as much electricity in a year as 16 coal power plants or nuclear reactors of 1 GW each.

Brent crude futures boosted on Thursday after Iran strongly rejected proposals for direct talks with the United States about nuclear standoff, while U.S. crude futures dropped and the Brent/WTI spread increased to a 2013 peak above $21 a barrel. Brent crude climbed 51 cents, or 0.44 percent, to settle at $117.24 a barrel, having traded from $116.71 to $117.83.

Centrica has announced that it intends to abandon plans to build new nuclear power stations in the UK because of the rising costs following changes to regulations after the Fukushima disaster in 2011. Centrica had been planning to build four plants with the French supplier EDF, but has now pulled out of the partnership.

Last year Germany installed about 2.4 GW of new wind power capacity with the nation reaching a total capacity of 31.3GW. Germany is investing in clean energy as it intends to phase-out nuclear power. It plans also to build offshore wind farms covering an area as much as six times the size of New York City and increase the renewable-energy production to about 40 %of total power production by 2020, in comparison to about 25%of now.
