Switzerland to vote on nuclear phase-out

Currently Switzerland has 5 nuclear reactors which generates 40% of its electricity, but an initiative submitted by the Green Party to phase-out nuclear energy by 2029 has secured enough support for a national referendum, as the Swiss Federal Chancellery has announced that 107,533 of the 108,227 signatures presented in a petition in November are valid.

EDF: French annual nuclear power production down 3.8% in 2012

French annual nuclear power production from 58 reactors owned by EDF totaled 404.9 TWh last year, a decrease of 3.8% compared to 421.1 TWh in 2011, this being the first decline since the crisis in 2009 (- 6.6%).

Belgium to build an artificial island to store wind power

Belgium plans to build an artificial island in the North Sea aimed to store wind energy, trying thus to lessen its reliance on nuclear power, as it intends to completely exit from nuclear power in the next future. The construction of the island in the North Sea will have a donut form and will be made out of sand, in a move that will be able to store some of the excess power generated by extensive offshore wind farms in the area.
